Matej Varga
Matej Varga is an experienced double bassist and bass guitarist. His musical journey commenced at the J.L. Bellu Conservatory in Banska Bystrica, where he studied under the guidance of Robert Ragan from 2006 to 2011. During this time, he garnered recognition for his outstanding artistic performances, motivating him to further his education at prestigious music schools. In 2011, he continued his studies at the University of Music Freiburg with Prof. Božo Paradžik. Further in 2017 to the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, guided by Prof. Heinrich Braun.
A significant aspect of his journey involved working under the guidance of eminent conductors such as Maris Jansons, Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Herbert Blomstedt, among others, further enriching his experience and musical prowess. He joined prestigious orchestras and ensembles. Notably, as a permanent member at Gärtnerplatztheater Munich since 2020 and previously as Co-Principal Bassist at Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, he showcased his proficiency. His skills were further refined during freelance contracts and an academy with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, as Principal Double Bassist at CHAARTS. Valuable internships at Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg/Theater and SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden Freiburg further enriched his style, shaping him into a versatile and passionate musician.
Along his musical journey, his passion for music has been recognized through various awards and scholarships. These include the Rotary Club Starnberg grant for double bass in 2016, the Helmut Spehl Prize Freiburg for exceptionally talented students in 2013, and the First Prize at the Slovak National Competition for String Players in 2008.
